Dry Skin
Dry skin is often itchy, rough and dull, and is caused by a lack of hydration.
There can be a number of reasons why the skin loses essential moisture, including: ageing, environmental conditions, lifestyle choices and medical conditions. The skin naturally contains a substance called hyaluronic acid, which helps to keep it soft and moist. As collagen levels decrease through the ageing process, so does hyaluronic acid and the subsequent strength of moisture in the skin.
Hydrated skin functions more efficiently, helping to remove dead skin cells from the surface. This natural replenishment of the complexion is what helps to maintain an appearance that is radiant and fresh.
Following a healthy lifestyle – eating a balanced diet, taking regular exercise and drinking plenty of water – enables the body to look and feel vibrant and young. When choices such as regularly drinking alcohol, smoking and consuming unhealthy foods become a way of life this can cause the body and the skin to accelerate the rate at which it ages. This can lead to a prematurely aged look, with dry skin becoming one of a variety of concerns.
During Summer, the sun’s rays can draw moisture from the skin, as can the dry Winter air and fluctuations in temperature when the chilly atmosphere outside meets the warmth of the central heating inside.
Those who have certain medical conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis, are used to caring for their dry skin and the regular application of emollients and other high strength moisturisers. If the signs of ageing have encouraged you to look towards requesting dermal fillers, they too can help with your dry skin. Many of these products contain high concentrations of hyaluronic acid which can aid the natural hydration and rejuvenation of the appearance.
Profhilo is a treatment that helps to remodel a tired skin structure and a lax appearance. This treatment helps to boost the production of collagen, which also raises the levels of hyaluronic acid – essential for locking moisture into the skin.
